Biomass policies workshop - Efficient use of biomass resources

Biomass Policies brings together eminent experts on biomass, bioenergy and biofuels from across Europe with key policy evidence and models to provide a better understanding of how this resource can be efficiently integrated in the energy & biomaterial systems taking account of domestic biomass resources availability, new conversion technologies as well as new stimulation and regulation measures.

Resource efficiency has recently been established as the guiding principle for all EU policies, under the Europe 2020 Strategy in January 2011 (COM/2011/21). The Strategy aims at building smart, sustainable and inclusive growth for Europe and it is clear that increased use of biomass in the European energy & materials sectors is a serious aim from now on and also beyond 2020, together with reaching high resources efficiency and a low carbon economy.

For the future it is therefore likely that the EC will incorporate higher mitigation criteria to energy to address the iLUC and resource efficiency targets. This will eventually lead to more competition between biomass uses for bioenergy and uses adding higher value.

This implies that economic operators, governments and agencies need to prepare their knowledge base and focus their activities to adapt their energy & material systems towards higher resource efficiency. The work planned in the Biomass Policies project includes the development of both monitoring frameworks & best practice guidelines which will be formulated based on sound knowledge to enhance resource efficiency in both practical implementation and policy stimulation for biomass in the EU.

This workshop is intended to discuss the baseline for biomass resource efficiency in Europe and how it can be best integrated in existing supply- demand modeling; which are the key factors that frame the term in recent policy documents; what type of information is already available; which are the gaps and how can policy makers best exploit current knowledge to inform the ongoing policy debates. Participation is free of charge.

Further information about Biomass Polices and this workshop can be found at www.biomasspolicies.eu.

CEPI will participate in the discussion.
